Registration Open for Camp Broadway at The Smith Center

Shawn Hemphill admits he felt nervous the first time he walked into The Smith Center’s Camp Broadway summer musical theater program. “I didn’t know anybody,” the Las Vegas teenager remembers. But within a matter of hours of participating in the camp’s workshops, which teach singing, dancing and acting to Southern Nevada children and teenagers, Hemphill was already connecting with new friends and feeling inspired with his own abilities. “Now I’m not nervous,” he says, reflecting on the new choreography he learned with other Las Vegas youths. “I feel more confident in myself, like I can do it.”

This kind of confidence building and collaboration are exactly what Camp Broadway at The Smith Center is all about.

Two Camps Put On Real Shows

The Smith Center recently opened up registration for its Camp Broadway program this July.  With a total of 150 openings available for children and teenagers across two weeklong, age-appropriate camps. Participants don’t necessarily need to love the performing arts to enjoy themselves and benefit from the camp.  The camp also focuses on nurturing teamwork, creativity and social skills.

“We truly see campers blossom each year as they build confidence, make new friends and discover what they’re capable of achieving,” says Louisa Lemos, director of the camp’s annual Family Finale. “The overall goal is to develop their character and build skills they can use throughout their lives.”

Camp Broadway at The Smith Center includes the Shining Stars Camp, with half-day sessions for children ages 6 to 9.  The Mainstage Camp includes full-day sessions for youths ages 10 to 17. Both programs conclude with campers performing thrilling musical productions for friends and family.  The Mainstage campers performing on stage in The Smith Center’s Reynolds Hall.

“You get to learn a musical in five days, and you learn dance numbers and get acting experience,” says Las Vegas teenager Hannah Rosenfeld. The excitement of learning a new production through the same process as professional performers kept Rosenfeld returning for six years. “I’ve made lifelong friends (at Camp Broadway),” she says.
