Even if the year 2020 hasn’t been exactly what any of us had in mind, some of our favorite things shouldn’t change. For me, it’s the Summer Beauty routine. It’s always a fun indulgence, anywhere. On the beach. Lounging in the backyard. In the living room. Or wherever the summer of 2020 takes us.
The summer beauty conversation has to begin with sunscreen. Sunscreen is important all year long, even if you’re stuck in your house. You are constantly exposed to the sun’s damaging rays which can cause premature aging and skin cancer. Experts recommend an SPF between 30-50 and stress the importance of reapplying often. Use a sunscreen specifically formulated for babies and/or children on your little ones. As a mom of three, I know all too well that sunscreen in the eye can ruin a fun summer day or be the standout memory of a getaway, so tear-free is key. One of my favorites is this one by Mustela https://amzn.to/2XUtSDc.
Ladies, I know it’s hard to let go, but it’s time to retire those leggings. It’s time for shorts, skirts, sleeveless and slits to show off that tanned skin. Self tanning is a must for the hot summer months though you must make sure to do it the right way.
There are a lot of great self-tanning options out there but if you don’t properly prepare your skin first, even the best of the best can instead look like the worst of the worst. The faux glow regimen that will keep you looking sun-kissed all summer long is using a self-tanner once a week followed by a gradual self tan moisturizer every day. Jergens Daily Glow moisturizer for both the face and body are my go-to’s summer after summer (https://amzn.to/2MSYcYv). Exfoliating is the most important step in the tanning process. DO NOT skip this step! There are many ways to exfoliate, though my personal favorite is dry brushing (https://amzn.to/3hox4i9), a technique that is extremely invigorating and energizing. It increases circulation and plumps skin which in turn can reduce the appearance of cellulite -yes please!
It’s easy to become disenchanted with makeup in the hot summer months, especially now that face masks have become a staple. But it literally takes five minutes for a simple summer makeup look that will keep you feeling like a hot mama all season long.
A tinted moisturizer, BB or CC cream with an SPF will even out your complexion and keep your face protected from the sun. Use a concealer anywhere you need some extra coverage (dark spots, breakouts, under eyes). Take your bronzer, I like one with shimmer, and brush it anywhere the sun would naturally kiss your face, then swirl an eyeshadow brush in the bronzer and apply it in the crease of your eye for some definition.
I’m not usually an advocate for waterproof mascara, but in the summer months it’s a must in order to avoid the black smudged eye. Add a water-resistant eyeliner in the lash line for a full lash look. Brush the apples of your cheeks with a pop of color and use a gloss or stain on your lips that coordinates with your cheeks. My favorite summer color is Nars’ Orgasm which comes in a powder or cream blush and a lipgloss or lipstick. Voila! Summertime beauty has never been easier… or looked better.
